Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk: Co-Chairs With a Love of History

Love of Hinsdale, its history and the variety of homes are what motivate Dee Bauer and Ruta Brigden, this year's Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk co-chairs.

Ruta has been involved with the kitchen walk for several years now, starting as a docent for a house one year, a house captain another year and co-chairing the walk last year and this one.

“It’s going to be another awesome walk,” she said. As always, the kitchen walk features a variety of homes from smaller and quainter to larger, expansive and ultra-modern. “I like the variety,” she said.

Both Ruta and Dee are especially excited about the Albert True House on 231 E. Third Street. This prairie-style house was built in 1908, and its latest owners have brought it up to the 21st century.

“I love history, and I believe in the historical preservation of Hinsdale,” Dee said. “I love the event and working with Ruta.”

The kitchen walk is not just a beloved springtime event in Hinsdale. It is the Hinsdale Historical Society’s largest and most visible fundraiser. Monies raised support, in part, the Society’s three properties—the Hinsdale History Museum on 15 South Clay Street, Immanuel Hall on 302 South Grant Street and the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio in Katherine Legge Memorial Park.

“Every year it gets bigger and better,” Ruta said. Like last year, the kitchen walk committee always wants to promote Hinsdale and has encouraged shopping and dining the day of the event, with certain retailers offering discounts and/or a portion of proceeds to benefit the Hinsdale Historical Society.

The Cooks’ Night Out Kitchen Walk preview party will be held on Friday, April 28 at the home of Julie Laux on County Line Road.

The Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 12 (Mother’s Day weekend). Tickets for the VIP Trolley tour have already been sold out, but to purchase tickets for the kitchen walk or for more information, visit www.kitchen-walk.com.
